Not a native speaker, so take with a grain of salt.
"Making a statement" is very generic; "the sky is blue" is a statement, and I just made it.
Making a point is usually about emphasizing something specific. "He made a point of mentioning his previous salary during the interview."

A statement is more about making a detailed or reasoned argument.
Making a point is more like demonstrating a single strand of an argument.
