of course........there use to be Vaudeville stars, and "Moving Picture" stars and Broadway stars, radio stars, sports stars, and even famous pilots, in the early days of flying.......all famous in their own right.

Yes its called egostistical journalism of some sort. I studied journalism but I had always learned of famous people, surely, some actors or actresses would have to have another type of talent as well and maybe we would see plays or theatrical talent shows, I remember growing up going to plays. They were somewhat boring to me I was more into art, reading, and writing and crafts, nevermind that I had toys that played music when I was small, I mean fame came for people to have fun in entertainment despite the television era.

Yes, people were famous even before TV existed. Movies and sports are two examples of how people can become celebrities without TV. And there are many more. Even ancient Greece and Rome had their celebrities.
