How long should I wait after oiling wood?

I am making something out of wood (pine i picked up from the store) and i want to make sure that it doesn't crack over time so I oiled it just a moment ago. I need to know how long I need to wait for it tall all absorb before I go the next step of routing out channels.

It was wood oil, but it doesn't give much more explanation than "mineral oil"

Mineral oil should be completely absorbed overnight. I use it on a wooden cutting board.

You simply do not understand the nature of wood. Wood dries out because the moisture escapes through the end-grain. Moisture is not escaping greatly through the surface grain. It is the fast drying out of the wood because the end grain is open that the wood is cracking. If you want wood to not crack, you must seal the end-grain. Not the surface. And I don't mean seal with oil.

Talk to a violin maker about how wood breathes and dries out.

Regardless of how long you wait, once you cut into it, you need to REAPPLY the oil.

best to do all cutting first ..then i use boiled linseed
