You have never had the life experience of being deeply isolated yet; have you?

To this day the part of being isolated in the TV Centennial series deeply troubles me!

… then there is a vast difference between being "lonely" and being "isolated"!!!

I don't do very well in watching Tom Hanks in Castaway!

It helps. But it’s already been demonstrated that sexual abstinence is difficult for even the most purposefully solitary of individuals, including those in various religions and spiritual sects who thought they could dispense with that particular human drive. If you can get past that, it’s easiier to countenance loneliness through being “mentally engaged” as you say, but we are not just intellectual  or spiritual creatures. We have bodies and hormones as well. That’s often our undoing, alas.

I've lived both sides and several in between. I've been somewhat of a recluse and lived in a house w/ many people. Even in so-called isolation, I never felt lonely or completely out of touch. I learned long ago to be thankful for what I've got and that being single is much better than attached to the wrong people. I think loneliness/dependency on others to be there for you regularly is a sign of weakness. I'm the best person to consistently entertain myself.

Supposedly, the mind is always engaged (maybe not when sneezing). We are in control of our attitude.

It doesn't 'cure' it, but it really helps to have things outside of other people to be interested in. This applies not just to this situation, but all the time. The more you can find to be interested in, the more you will realize the importance of education, the arts, learning, and brain exercise, and you'll widen your perspectives on the world. That's never a bad thing.

It definitely helps with cogitation.  Older people are FAR less prone to getting dementia or Alzheimer's disease if they read or do crossword puzzles than if they just sit in front of the TV and watch "The Price Is Right" and "Wheel of Fortune".

I suppose it would work for loneliness, too, but I am never lonely.
