Bobbin thread isn’t picking up in sewing machine. How to fix?

I have recently bought the Austin AS17 sewing machine and my needle isn’t picking up the bobbin thread. I tried all the videos on how to put it in properly. What do I do?

Change the needle for a new one. Nearly always works.

A bent or blunt needle can throw the timing off.

Not sure what you have tried.

Thread the upper thread and pull a thread tail behind the needle. Put in the bobbin, make sure it is caught on the tension, pull a thread tail off to the side. Hold the upper thread tail and manually turn your hand wheel towards you.  The needle should move down and pick up the bobbin thread.  Grab the bobbin thread and pull it behind the needle with the upper thread.
