What's your method of keeping white sweat socks in original pairs? Making a unique mark on bottom of each 2 socks with a permanent marker?

Random chance says they will wear evenly (except for manufacturing defects) ... but to be more precise ... to start put all clean socks on the right side of the sock drawer. After you wear a few pair and wash them put the cleaned ones on the LEFT side. {ditto - wear more, wash more, put on LEFT side.} When all of the socks are gone from the right side, move the clean socks from the left side to the right (and rinse and repeat, lol). This will equalize the wear patterns for the socks.

Have a supply of safety pins, alligator clips or something like that handy near the hamper, and pin the dirty socks together before they go into the laundry. (“Permanent” marker is permanent only when you don’t want it to be.) I realize this runs the risk of damaging the socks in the washing machine. Maybe you could just double them up and put them into the hamper that way, then make sure no two identical pairs go into the same load. Or you could take contrasting thread and embroider a little code on them in an unobtrusive place. Just a few stitches of green or black or red or brown or purple or orange or blue could identify a mate.
