How do I kill sticker bushes that are overgrown?

I put on heavy clothes and gloves and cut them as close to the ground as possible.  Then I dig out the roots with pick and shovel.  I don't have access to a backhoe.  I would never dream of trying to poison something like that.  It's impractical.

Do you know what they are?...a number of different plants have prickles and not all respond well to the same removal techniques.
