Backpacking Freeze dried foods?

Just a backpacking question that I’ve found no internet answer to. Can you take freeze dried peas and grind them into powder and carry that powder with you? Will you be able to just add the peas to water and boil up a quick cup of split pea soup?

What about a dried or freeze dried tomato powder for tomato soup?

Update:

Yeah, I realize there are other ingredients in these recipes. And I intended to make adjustments with spices and such. But I was interested in their base components, ie tomato soup has at its base tomatoes, and the same for peas and pea soup. Actually, what concerned me about peas was that split pea soup requires dried peas be soaked. I didn’t know if this was due to softening the lease or leaching our non edible stuff

Go to Allrecipies.com and look for the ingredients in the soups you are asking about. Your dried fruits/veggies might sub for a part of the recipe, but there are seasonings and meats that are also reqired.

Putting tomato powder in water just makes tomato juice.  Tomato soup has more ingredients, such as vegetables and herbs and spices. Same with freeze dried peas - mixed with water you won't get pea soup, you'll just get pea flavored water. You can make your own freeze dried soup mix by using a base vegetable  and adding other dried vegetables and herbs and spices. You might want to experiment at home and taste the results before you take them on an extended trip.

well sure-but you'd probably want some other things in there---herbs and such....but they do make packet soups just like that...already made up?!

Ask yourself this: why do you think you couldn't do that??

Try it at home and see how it works.

When I do wilderness hiking, I bring dehydrated (dried) vegetables and mushrooms from a Asian grocery. Add hot water and slurp down. It's not real tasty but neither are those meal packets for back packers.

  • I recommend carrying and MRE ration on you that makes either split pea soup or tomato soup.

Can't see why not. Just remember that split peas are not the same as green peas. And split peas are already dried when you buy them, just plain dried, not freeze dried. If you take tomato powder, make sure it's in a very airtight container. Tomato powder clumps very easily from even a bit of moisture
