Hiroshima and Nagasaki was about cutting WWII with the Japanese short. If those two nukes had not scared the crap out of Hirohito and Tojo, the war to invade Japan and bring them to their knees in unconditional surrender could have droned on for many more months. And many more military, on both sides, would have been maimed and killed.
There is no such thing as a purely military war. There is always collateral damage even when innocents are not the primary targets. And in WWII both the allies and their enemies killed tens of thousand of civilians either on purpose or as collateral damage. Neither side was innocent of that.
