what does "Channel Not Purchased" mean on Directv?

i have Directv. but, i noticed ever since my family bought it lots of channels have the channel not purchased sign on it. what does that mean?

It means the reason you don't get that channel is your family hasn't paid for it. You can have it turned on, but your family will have to purchase a subscription to it that will appear on its monthly bill.
