My ovens top element is caked with grease, will it catch on fire ?

I haven’t used my oven in 3 years ( long story) I am planning to clean it in a couple days so far I tried to use soap and warm water to wipe the element. A bit of the grease came off but barely anything because it’s caked. The last time I used it it was smoking because I was cooking something that splatered. Ever since then I was so scared of a fire that I just stopped using it. It’s only  the top element I am worried about.

Use standard aerosol oven cleaner from the supermarket. Follow the instructions as it is a powerful alkaline and will burn your skin and the fumes are mean.

You may have to do this  couple of times if the grease is really thick and burned on.

There is very little likelihood of fire, but it is not out of the question if the grease is really, really thick and you turn the oven onto a very high temperature for a long time.

    Your woven or stove?

For your stove use a tad of Dawn dish soap. Don’t use too much water. Get a small plastic pan scrapper.

Once you clean it you'll be fine. There's no danger then so no need to worry. It's a matter of applying some elbow grease and a good degreasing cleaner.

Remove the burner and soak it in dish soap for awhile then use scrubber
