Question about buying used cars from dealerships in California?
In California, when you buy a new car, the dealership collects DMV registration fees, including use tax, so when you drive away the car is already registered in your name (or will be soon since the paperwork has been submitted).
When you buy a used car from a private party, you have to go register your purchase with the DMV (and pay the use tax and other fees) yourself.
My question is, how does it work when you buy a USED car from a DEALERSHIP?

The dealer will handle the title work for a used car just like they do for a new one. The only difference may be some dealers issue tags for brand new cars but not for used....you have to go to the DMV and get your own.
No difference in taxes beyond the difference in prices.
When buying from a dealer, they collect sales tax and remit it for you. When buying from a private party you pay it on your own.

Some used car dealerships also do the same as new cars. Others, the cheaper, older, model car dealerships will not. They will collect sales tax per state laws but they have to report it and it will show on the BMV's records if they surrendered that tax to the State.

They usually take care of the registration and title transfer for you. The sales contract will tell you if they will.
