Why is Boris Johnson misleading the public about it being safe to return to work and go to school?
Boris Johnson has told people who can't work from home to return to work if their place of work is open for business. He has said this is based on the best scientific advice and that as long as people use common sense it is safe to do so.
He is also insisting schools should reopen from 1st June again as it is safe to do so.
I work for DWP on night shift and have worked throughout lock down as I could not do my job from home. But many of my day shift colleagues have been sitting at home for 2 months on full pay doing nothing.
With all the people losing their jobs and claiming benefits (over 2,000,000 since lock down began) I would have thought the DWP would have a we are essential workers and have a all hands on deck approach.
But my colleagues have been told by their bosses that benefit payment is not a government priority and they should not expect to return to work until it is safe to do so and to not expect to return until New Year.
How is it safe for joe public to return to work and schools to reopen but not safe for the governments own employees to return?
@ Anonymous 'You have to go back to work sometime' You miss my point which is why if it is safe are the government telling it's own employees it is not safe and they shouldn't expect to return until New Year.

You have to go back to work sometime, the concern is to do so without increasing the rate of infection. It is up to employers to adapt their workplaces to maintain social distances. For jobs like construction and manufacturing this is possible since safe distancing can be observed. Big social gatherings are still not possible. Vulnerable people are not expected to return to work and anyone who is ill should be in isolation. School children are not thought to be transmitting the disease and having them at home is stopping some people returning to work.

1) Despite the fact that we still have 3000+ deaths a day - which is more than three times higher than Italy or Germany - it gives the appearance that things are improving. They aren't.
2) It appeases the right of his party and large corporate donors.
3) The change in message to "be alert" implies that the government have done something, and that if you get it now then it is entirely your fault. It's a pathetically childish attempt to avoid blame.
4) It goes against conservative ideology to say that society (which many don't even believe exists) can sometimes benefit from reduced economic activity, and that it is sometimes necessary to support people who aren't in work. It also comes dangerously close to saying that people on universal credit are actually just ordinary people, not skivers and shirkers.
5) You know why it's safe for John Bull to go back to work but not the government - for the same reason why MPs have yearly salary rises on top of generous pay. The government don't think the peasantry have any worth, except a couple of months before an election. Peasants are a renewable resource.
