Why on TV do Americans Put their car keys in the sun visor? Is this a real thing in the US?

    Yes it is a bit strange because this is the first place a thief would look. f your keys are anywhere in the car then you can't lock the car.

    It's because cars don't have ash trays any more! The ash tray used to be the key compartment!!!

    They don't want to show how to hotwire a vehicle, and in modern vehicles, they need a convenient method for the character to take the vehicle (since hotwiring isn't really an option anymore).
