Do you think colleges will last the whole semester this fall? Or do you think they will be forced to shut down?

One theory I have heard is that colleges are just "planning" to go back to school to deter students from taking the semester off that way they make more money. People I have talked to are split: some say the semester will be completely online, while others say it will be done in-person. Thoughts?

This fall will feature COVID-19 and influenza

I think it's likely to vary by location.  Some places are more affected than others, and may be able to easily start and continue in person.  Other places may not be so lucky, but I imagine they'll still start in person if at all possible.  I don't believe there is some conspiracy to fool students into enrolling.

In the U.S., most universities have already made the commitment to return to on-campus classes and to stay through Thanksgiving (end of November).  It is unlikely that campuses will shut down and send people home unless they are mandated to do so by the government.  There seems to be a much better understanding of how to limit exposure and treat infected people.  It is also clear that most young, healthy people will not get seriously ill or need hospitalization.  It is also clear that hundreds of thousands of college students didn't "go home" when schools shut.  They stayed together in their rented college apartments and seem to have done just fine.

Many colleges are attempting on-ground classes with smaller class sizes, optional online or 50% online, etc.  A few colleges like the California state system have said no on-ground.

One small college I know sounds like they have an excellent plan, including daily testing of faculty and students, one-way staircases, etc., but we'll see.If a college discovers an enormous infection rate, it will re-evaluate its decision.
