Is it legal to kill someone in defense of others?

If I see a person trying to kill another person, am I then allowed to kill that person, to defend the innocent person?

Kill? Only if necessary. You can use necessary force to save the person in question though.

Yes. The legal doctrine of self defense includes the defense of others in addition to defending oneself.

But it is an 'affirmative defense' meaning if after it comes up in court you'll have to prove you were right and it truly was justifiable defense.

Yes, self defense includes defending another person. The important thing to remember in that regard is that a court might not agree that the criteria for self defense was met regardless of the claim or opinion of the  person doing the killing. Example: self defense is a tough thing to support if the "attacker" was shot in the back.
