Do I need my passport to enter Canada ? ?

My birthday is next week and I have an option to go to Canada. I found research saying my 3year olds don’t need one but for adults I haven’t found much info on that.

Yes, you need a passport to enter Canada.

But right now the border between Canada and the US is closed due to COVID-19.

If you meet one of the limited requirements for admission to Canada as a result of the current Pandemic you must quarantine yourself for 14 days prior to coming in contact with any individuals outside of the immediate group you are travelling with.  That means you can stay in a hotel or, as some have done, camp in the yard of a family member for the required 14 days.  Whether you are from the US or another country the 14 day quarantine is a requirement.  The only other options are those who work in essential services in Canada or are heading to Alaska by road.  If that is the case then your are expected to minimize your stops and contact with others and drive directly there.  Fines of $1,200 are issued for those who violate these rules and may be issued more than once.  In addition if you say one thing and do another fines are significantly higher followed by expulsion and a prohibition on entering Canada for up to 5 years (longer in some cases up to permanent bans).

Since about 2008, a passport is required to enter the United States, even a U.S. citizen returning from Canada or Mexico.  Neither of those countries requires one per se, but since they do not wish to be stuck with Americans who cannot return, they generally require production of a passport to let someone in.  Actually, the United States cannot deny entry to a U.S. citizen, whether or not he has a passport, but they can delay the matter for hours while they verify status.  There is also consideration being given to imposing a fine on U.S. citizens who try to reenter without a passport.

Right now, though, the border between the U.S. and Canada is closed for tourist traffic, on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Years ago,  they allowed me to enter without one,  but told me that I would  not be allowed BACK into America, without one.

Not their rule, but AMERICA's rule.

and that was before 9/11.     These days, I am sure you need one-

but it's a moot point, as the border is CLOSED due to Covid-19.

You're not going anywhere.--or at least.......not to Canada.

My birthday is next week and I have an option to go to Canada. REALLY?

    Assuming you are exempt

It is possible to travel to Canada.  BY Airplane EVERYONE must have their own passport.

I found research saying my 3year olds don’t need one. That is true after the land crossings open. As you are the ADULT you NEED something. Most use a passport as identity.Children can use a Birth Certificate.MUST BE US BORN.

There is only ONE place you need to research. The Government of Canada web page for entry to Canada procedures.

For the USA there is also ONE place to look. They are also linked together on their individual web sites.

U.S. citizens can present a valid: U.S. Passport; Passport Card; Enhanced Driver’s License

    https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hem...

You can travel to Canada only if you are exempt from the travel restrictions and are coming for an essential purpose.

Assuming you are exempt the details are here. WARNING some have not told the truth recently and went off course and were fined $1200 EACH.

    https://www.cic.gc.ca/visit-visiter/en/visas

Info also on both the US Embassy in Ottawa or Canada Embassy in Washington pages.

The Border is CLOSED at this time until the end of July. It may be extended.

Assuming you are exempt you can come. Doubtful that you are. Being polite BC has a special welcome for visitors. Hint Canadians are not very anxious to have visitors from an area that has high Covid numbers.

Of course you do know that you would be in Canada at least two weeks?

ALL that enter must quarantine except those given special exception. (Essential workers)

Assuming you're all American, everybody entering needs a passport if flying. Children under 16 don't need one if they're travelling with their parents and are entering by land or sea but still need to provide proof of citizenship, typically with a birth certificate.

That being said, due to COVID-19, non-essential travel into Canada is prohibited until July 21, and that date will probably be extended given how bad the COVID problem is in the US. You probably won't be allowed into the country.

If you are a US citizen in the USA and your child is also a US citizen then > you < need a passport or passport card if you travel to Canada via surface transport.  Children under the age of 16 can get by with only their birth certificate if entering Canada via surface transport.

If you are flying to Canada then all passengers need a regular passport.

  • Due to covid 19 you may not be able to get into Canada right now, our boarder is closed to non essential travel.

Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry both proof of citizenship and proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. Children under 16 need only present proof of citizenship. But double check with the Canadian passport office website, if you're not coming from the US. Officials extended the boarder closing until July 21st, but we don't know if they will further extend it, due to the covid situations / cases in the US. Which are way higher then in Canada.

Yes, you have to have a passport or passport card. The law on that changed a few years ago. It's pretty easy to look up. It doesn't really matter- the border is closed to any nonessential travel until July 21.
