Centuries ago, due to the primitive state of medical, sanitary & agricultural knowledge, people had a much shorter life expectancy. Many died in childbirth or infancy. Many mothers also died. It was necessary to start producing children at an earlier age, as there was no guarantee that women would live to be 35 before having children.
