Copper IUD users:  What is it like?

Hormonal IUD users are welcome to chime in, too, but I'm mainly interested in the copper IUD. I've been on birth control pills for about a year now and still have the worst mood swings (thought it might get better with time, but it hasn't), so I've been thinking that maybe it's time to try the non-hormonal route.

What was having the IUD put in like? Did you have any side effects? When you decided to have the IUD taken out so you could get pregnant again, did you have any problems with trying to conceive?

It was painful.  Not "scream" painful but definitely "cringe" painful.  But really only for a few minutes.  They told me I should have someone with me to drive me home but that was in my case totally unnecessary, I was feeling fine, just crampy afterwards.  Apparently it depends a lot  on the skill of the doc so maybe ask around your girlfriends or  read some reviews beforehand.

I had some  minor menstrual type cramping for a few weeks after, and then it was fine.  My periods *did* get worse... basically for  me on the pill I might not have noticed I was having them except for the bleeding, whereas I (then and now) have a day per month where I need to take an aleve.  Again, for me at least, very manageable.  If you went on the pill because you have hell periods and now you don't, you might well go back to your hell periods.

Zero pregnancies with it in, a few months after removal conceived, had a pleasant pregnancy  healthy normal delivery of healthy baby.  No big at all:)
