She should be ready to nurse after her baby is born but her breasts will fill with milk during her pregnancy.

Milk comes right when the baby needs it. Colostrum is the first thing JR will be getting and that is a nice hit for baby in terms of immune health, and nourishment which is why the first breast feeding is good to do even for mom's who plan to bottle feed. Ladies bodies are full of hormones and neurotransmitters that make bonding with baby happen, and also helps milk flow. The suckling of babies and that sort of manual simulation helps with signaling of milk release to modified skin cells responsible for the production of milk. Even men can make breast milk, especially after getting the hormone prolactin. People ask why men have nipples, but the answer is very simple. If mom dies in childbirth and can not provide JR with milk Dad is plan B, if he wants his child to live. Some people can get a nurse maid, but honestly if more dads breastfeed, they would have a greater case in court when asking for custody of the kids IMO.

Most women will start producing colostrum shortly before delivery. One of the ways that women can tell how close they are to delivery is by keeping an eye on whether or not they are producing anything from their breasts, in fact. Nursing starts pretty much right after birth, but for the first few days baby only gets colostrum. It sustains baby and keeps him/her well hydrated until mom's milk comes in a few days later.

I started nursing straight after the birth. If my milk came in before then I was not aware of it. 

Mine didn’t come in until about 4 days after giving birth but everyone is different 

A new mom is ready to nurse once your milk comes in sometimes it happens before you give birth or couple days after but the best thing I would suggest is to talk to your doctor or a lactation nurse and i hope this helps you.
