Why are the United States and China closing each other's embassies?

The FBI found that the Chinese were hacking labs to steal information on COVID-19 vaccine research (cheaper than developing it yourself) and told the Chinese to close their Houston consulate. The Chinese denied this and retaliated in kind. SOP. No big deal.

They are not closing each other embassies. The US and China are the #1 and #2 economies in the world and communicate a lot, and that continues. 

However, there has always been tension between the two nations, and it's as a high point right now. What's happening is that they are "bickering around the margins", they have each moved to close some consulates (not embassies) of each other, and have made various statements critical of each other. 

Both sides are trying to negotiate and make their arguments without creating a broad-based conflict. 

Some of the issues that have arisen recently include:

* Human Rights in China and Uighr conflicts

* Intellectual property rights in China

* Hong Kong

* Taiwan

* Inner Mongolia and Xijan province.
