Fans of Star Trek, what do you think of Deep Space Nine? ?
I’m on episode 9 and so far they honestly feel like they could all be TNG episodes. Not much of a difference except in characters. Does it get better over time? My dad, a huge Star Trek fan, has said to me before that he thinks the show is too dark compared to every other Trek, the characters often dislike each other and episodes will focus on their disagreements, whereas stuff like that won’t happen on other Trek shows because everyone is civil.

It gets a lot better over time and is great by season 3. Season 1 in particular has some stinkers. The tenth episode, "Move Along Home," is especially bad, so good luck with that. :) However, the 19th episode, "Duet," is terrific. And there's a really good three-parter at the beginning of Season 2, as well.
I don't recall any prolonged dislike or disagreement amongst the crew, but there are some antagonists that stick around and cause trouble. What's different about Deep Space Nine is that they can't just warp away from problem situations or people. This results in some excellent serialized storytelling.

Like the other series, some good episodes, some so-so. It didn't leave the impact on me the way TNG and TOS did.

Quark, Garak, and Odo went a long ways to fleshing out on what could have been just another Trek series.

Well, I have to invoke another series. I never really watched DS9 much. I enjoyed Voyager more than DS9.

DS9 is weak at best. I just do not like it. It is more of a soap opera than a real science fiction show. I like TOS and TNG.

I'm not a full-on Trekkie, but I lived with one in college. I've seen the entire TOS, entire TNG, and a good chunk of early DS9 before I graduated and stopped watching. I caught a random smattering of DS9 episodes after that, same with Voyager and Enterprise.
The thing about DS9 is that it's the most un-Trek of the Treks. If you think it's too much like TNG, then you're going to have that same complaint about every Trek series. DS9 attempted to do a lot more worldbuilding in depth, focusing on Bajoran/Cardassian politics, and the Ferengi. IMHO, it was quite a bit more interesting than TNG.
But my understanding is that after I stopped, they started being more about exploration through the wormhole and less about that other stuff. In other words it became MORE like regular Trek.
IMHO, you should watch Stargate SG-1. Aside from a brief bit of nudity in the pilot episode which I'm sure your parents won't appreciate, it's a far better show than Trek.
