What counts as portrait photography?

    That the portrait is of a particular individual. Using Sumi's example, a picture of a cowboy on a horse is not a portrait

    Portrait photography is any image of a living thing for the primary intention of showing the physical features of that living thing. 

    The lines of what is and isn't a portrait can get blurry at times.  For example, a photo of a cowboy riding his horse while roping a bull isn't a portrait.  But the same cowboy on the same horse posing for the camera is a portrait.  I think it boils down to the intent of the image.  The photo of the cowboy roping a bull has the intent of showing the action of the cowboy and IS the main reason for the photo.  On the other hand, the main intent of the photo of the cowboy on his horse posing is to simply show what the main subject looks like.
