Hormones are secreted by specialized epithelial cells in response to a stimulus.
Peptide hormones dissolve in blood and bind to membrane receptors on target cells, causing the cell to modify already created proteins.
Steroid hormones are carried through blood and bind to intracellular receptors in target cells, causing the cell to transcribe genes and make new proteins.
