A cricket batsman hits a ball at a speed of 27ms^−1 at an angle of 60 degrees to the horizontal. How far away would you have to stand in order to catch it (assuming you want to catch it just before it hits the ground)?
Assume the downward acceleration is 9.8 ms^-2.

Using s = ut + (1/2)at² for vertical and horizontal motion we have:
(↑) 0 = 27tsin60 - 4.9t²
so, t = 27sin60/4.9 => 4.77 seconds
(→) s = 27tcos60
Hence, s = 27(4.77)cos60 => 64.4 metres
