Buying a new car out of state?
I live in California, and I'm considering dealerships in other states for a new vehicle purchase. There seems to be a lot of special and complicated rules for doing this. I understand the smog/emissions requirements that are unique to out-of-state vehicles being registered in California, but there seems to be a lot more than that.
If you live in California and have actually done this, could you please help clear the clutter? What exactly is involved?
(If you're wondering, the trim level and color combination I want is very hard to find around here, but quite common in other parts of the country for some reason.)

It can be done but usually does not save you any money. All dealers work with the same wholesale pricing and MSRP. Prices may very by few hundred dollars but you will spend that much travelling to the other state. I suggest you get quotes from all dealers within 200 miles of your home.

Save yourself money and grief and buy a California car in California and before purchase take it for a state inspection.

If you are a resident, the car must be CA emission compliant.

Glad that "regerugged" boosts AAA, but 1) It means "American Automobile Association" and 2) not all, or even most, clubs do title or registration work.
Just call the BMV/DMV where you plan to register the car - being California, we an assume it will be a nightmare and No, you won't escape paying Cal taxes and fees by purchasing out-of-state....in fact, you'll pay extra fees.

Buy a membership to the AAA's. Automobile Association of America. They can handle all of the transfer paperwork for you. The annual fee is $50. And you get periodicals from them.

Americans are free to travel and relocate at will. Many people move to California after buying a car in another state. If there's anything special about selling a car to another state's resident, the dealership is responsible for whatever paperwork that might entail, and any prohibitions.
