No, I like many investors have a brokerage account but the brokerage firm has membership in the exchange that access to the markets
The investing general public DOES NOT and CAN NOT have accounts with a stock exchange they must use the services of a registered broker/dealer who has MEMBERSHIP in that exchange.
For years, I was a member of the stock exchange but none of my customers could have accounts with the exchange.
For the first time in Years, I don't agree 100% with the ZMAN

Yes, I have a Schwab account. I'm broke, so it's pretty much empty. Every time I sell a stock, I keep one share so I can remember what I had, plus it's the easiest way to keep track of the price. So right now there is only three shares in there, plus some loose cash from interest/dividends.

Yes, I have had a stock market account for over 40 years. During that time the account has been transferred to different brokerages when brokerages where I had the accounts closed.
