Small orange spiders with thin webs all over yard?
Not like spider webs, and not the big swabs you see in trees. These are individual lines hanging down from trees, and covering the air. Sometimes I see little orange caterpillars hanging from them. I can't find them on the Internet.

I don't think the spiders and the mites are sharing threads. They have them in common. Since threads seem to be the main feature I'll assume that they're not spider mites. Baby spiders (and also other silk spinning arthropods) travel by spinning a line and waiting for the breeze to catch it and carry it away. A times a year it's a noticeable phenomenom where I live due to different species of spider having their main hatching season at different times. It's considered lucky to get one in your hair. It's supposed to mean that you're about to come into money, not that I've ever won the lottery!
