Are animals in laboratories a good thing or a bad thing?

I hear things like animals in laboratories are necessary for research when looking for cures and treatments for diseases, and I also hear that it’s cruel to keep animals in laboratories.  Not sure what to believe. What do you think?

    IF I were to develop a serious disease, I might look at this differently, but for me right now, using animals for laboratory testing is all bad.   It might depend on how the animal is being kept however.
