What is the duty of a Capt on a ship that is sinking?

are there any very specific laws that say something about duty to life etc etc?

    On the ships I work on, they are on the bridge during emergencies coordinating actions of different emergency teams.   When they give the abandon ship signal the captain goes to lifeboat #1 and assumes command of that boat.

    Are you thinking about the idea that the captain goes down with his ship?  That's a myth and not true.

    The captain is responsible for all the souls aboard the ship and a good captain will not leave until he is sure everyone else is off.  Thus, when there are still people on board he won't leave but continue to try to get them off. Sometime this becomes too late . . .
