That's why I tell people never to keep the only versions of their files on a usb stick - they can fail for a variety of reasons.  If you only have a copy on there you still have the original to revert to.

They can fail for several reasons, could be static electricity, could be proximity to a magnet, could be damaged connectors, could be a faulty chip, all sorts. They aren't bullet-proof.

You could try formatting it and using it again, to see if it now decides to work properly or not, hopefully it will and the only problem was a corrupt file or two.

sounds like your USB died. return it, or buy a new one.

Sounds like something corrupted the file allotment table.  That is the listing that tells the computer what files and folders are on the usb stick and where to find them.  It would also hold the date for when the files or folders were created.

Any number of things could have caused this.  Static electricity, dirt in the connector, bad memory chip in the usb stick, power surge from the speaker.

You can reformat the stick on try using it again.  It was caused by an electric charge it should be fine.  If it is "mechanical" it will fail again and you will know then that you need to throw it away.
