    2x² - 98 = 0

    You can move the constant to the other side then divide both sides by 2:

    2x² = 98

    x² = 49

    Now get the square root of both sides:

    x = ±7

    There are two solutions.  Answers A and C.

    2x^2 - 98 = 0

    We want x = _____

    rule: what you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to both!

    Add 98 ((I usually add/subtract first)):

    2x² = 98

    Divide by 2:

    x² = 49

    Take square root of both sides:

    √x² = √49

    x = 7, or x = -7 so (a) & (c) answers

    Why both:

    7² = 49

    (-7)² = 49
