The operating system never be a virus. But you should upgrade your OS because many software is not supporting nowadays. 

Tell your friend you did and your  system works fine.  He will be VERY confused.

System32 is a directory where much of what makes windows work in the first place actually lives.  This is a VITAL directory.

So, as long as your friend is toying with you, toy with him right back.

No, don't ever delete system32; it is not a virus. System 32 has critical system files and system applications that are necessary for the OS to work properly. So if you delete them, it will destroy your operating system, and your system will even fail to boot.

System32 is one of the central windows folders, it is not virus and your friend is either stupid or trying to make you delete a windows system folder for a laugh. If you try to delete it best case windows won't let you, worst case you need to reinstall.
