Do wild ducks get lonely?
This past spring, a coworker asked if I could adopt four wild newborn ducklings. They had been stranded in a sewer grate. I already have six pet ducks. I accepted. Tried to raise them more like a wildlife rehabilitator. Not as pets. Had success with three of them. The fourth was attacked by a cat. Nevermind.
Anyway, they grew into healthy adults and flew the fence. They used to come back and hang out and then fly away again. Last weekend, only one came back. She seemed lonely. The stupid cat tried to chase her and she flew off. Do lone, wild mallards easily integrate into other flocks? Is she probably destined to be just a loner? My domestic Khaki Campbells never really accepted her. Can she survive, out there, without companionship?
Yes, I appreciate Punya's answer. It's what I expected to read. I'm not trying to keep them. Always wanted them to stay wild. This was a situation that was thrust upon me.
They grew up and flew away. They're getting separated in the wild and only one comes back. They're all welcome back anytime if they want to visit. Had hoped I wouldn't worry about them so much. Our town is on the confluence of two rivers. Hope they're there somewhere. Hoping they're readily accepted if they meet any others.

Ducks are social animals that get along very well with each other and seldom fight. They are not solitary creatures and will become depressed and lonely quite easily; which will make it difficult for them to survive or thrive. Because they do feel loneliness, isolation, and grief much like humans; leaving a duck alone or caged for long periods of time is not emotionally healthy. NEVER keep just one duck; this is cruel. Ducks are highly social animals and this means they need other ducks to live with. While it is possible to keep just one duck, it is strongly recommended that you have at least one other duck for company, while having three or four would be best.
