What are the upsides and downsides of changing your name legally?

I mean changing it completely. First and Last name. Anybody done it and what is it like?

Update:

I want to change it for a different reason. I like to take the last name of my great-grandmother because she died very young and had a tough life, lost her son from murder, all her brothers were lost and killed in the WWII

For me it's a gift to her for continuing her family name.

I know it's a big step and why I want to make it's done correctly.

You end up with a name you prefer if you don't change your mind. You have to go to the trouble and expense of changing all your legal documents like driver's licenses and passports.

I've done it but still haven't applied for new documents and things. The hearing was 2 or 3 minutes at the most.

My name was ghetto and connected to people I don't care for.

    Upsides:

    - If you have an embarrassing name or one that causes spelling/pronunciation problems, you won't have that issue any more.

    - If you don't get along with your family, it's a break from them.

    Downsides:

    - Your family will likely be upset or confused.

    - You'll lose a connection to your family and heritage, and a part of your identity. I think a name chosen by your parents at birth is important and is part of who you are.

For me it seems like a drastic thing to do unless there is a serious reason that your birth name is holding you back in life.
