Which is better..housing or just plain old renting?
I've lived in NYC my entire life. Love it here. I only wish to know if there are certain programs that i could know of which could give a 27 year old like my self the opportunity to find an independent home. Apartment? For educational and responsibility purposes. I have a job as a pharmacy cashier and i work in the tri-state area.

Most people start by sharing a rental unless they are lucky enough to be able to live with their family. That's how I started. We were 6 girls in 3 bedrooms with one bathroom. By the time I was your age I had saved enough for the down payment on a one bedroom which I still have. Take a look in Astoria, that will give you the best combo of price and convenience.

We have had houses for 50 years. The first cost about $16000 in the early '70s. The present house is worth about $1 500 000 .
Allowing for mortgages, selling and buying costs and renovations, we have made about 6% per annum on our original deposit.
Living has been cheap, recently, now the last mortgage is paid, just property taxes and utilities. It worked for us.

How about if the public just give you a house for free? Is that what you want?
