What kind of dish is this?

Does it say Italy on the bottom? 

It's meant to be a table centerpiece, the sort of thing you leave in the middle of a formal dining table when it's not in use with two nice candle sticks either side.  It's really a fancy fruit bowl, the shape dating back to the days when people showed how rich they were by having a bowl of grapes and exotic fruits smack in the middle of the table just to remind guests all the time.  Nowadays many people put a block of florist's foam in it and use it to make a flower arrangement for the table.  The shape itself is often called a "compote."

I can't really see the shape of it, nor can I tell the scale.

Next time put another widely recognized object in the photo like a Coke or soup can.
