How can France be so rich being such a small country?
@Snafu It is a very very small country. Europe itself is not that big. Now imagine France. Or just Google it and you will see.
What the... People are still questioning my allegation that France is a small country? Boy, other than Russia and maybe the 3 farther nordic, every european country is very small. Someone asked: compared to what? Compared to the big countries, of course!
But since you guys are having trouble admitting it, let's change it to Switzerland. I guess we can all agree that Switzerland territory is small, right? Now, how can it be so rich?
Haha another one states the absurd. Boy, have people been skipping geography lessons nowadays or what? Guess what, maybe I should teach you guys some geography, right? Here, take this straight fact, grasshoppers:
France's territory is slightly smaller than the state of Texas.
Time for new lesson for those who can't see things how they are: Did you know that "The average journey time by train between Caen and Marseille is 8 hours and 19 minutes, with around 5 trains per day"? That is far Northwest to far Southeast in 8,32 hours. And by plane it would be 1h 35 min. So yeah, the verdict remains unchanged: very small. Stay around and save the question for more lessons on France's Territory Size.
@Percy, Paul Freire would be proud of you.

You know the saying, size doesn't matter, it's the way you use it that's important.
France has a population of around 65 million. To give you an idea, if the USA had the same population density as France, it would have almost one billion inhabitants (it has 328 millions). If Russia had the same population density as France, it would have 1.7 billion inhabitants (it has 145 millions).
That's one non negligible factor.
You also have to consider the fact that France is one of the founding members of the biggest trading block in the world. The EU is not the reason why France became rich, but it's a reason why it stays this way.
Colonialism played a significant role in that wealth, and honestly, a more indirect form of that is exactly how most rich countries stay rich and become richer today.

France is not a small country.
Like all countries which have been developed for centuries it has managed to build up its industries and agriculture and its populations educational standards which produce wealth .

Half of it is highly industrialised and generally profitable.
The other half is agricultural and milks the EU to be even more profitable .
It also used to have a big empire.
It is not a small country with 65 million people.

Small compared to what? It's considerably bigger than many countries, and not just in Europe.
