How much does an electrician charge to install a ceiling light?

That depends if there is wiring already there .If so it would be cheap or fairly cheap .If there is no box and wires and there is access to a crawl space or attic .The cost would be more but usually still reasonable as far as cost .If there is no attic access it would require cutting the walls to install the wire. There is stuff called wire mold that's a surface mount wire raceway and no wall cutting would be necessary However the extra labor curing the walls ,and the price of wire mold The last 2 options can get rather pricey STAY AWAY FROM UNLICENSED HANDYMAN .I am a licensed electrician in CA .I have spent many hours undoing handyman work If you do hire a handy man your taking a risk Since you can't verify his or her experience, and most likey they won't have insurance to cover any damage done by sub par work ,and if they do .I doubt it'll enough to repair any damages done .More house fires are started by shoddy electrical work ,and improper use of extension cords .

If there is already wiring to the location, their minimum charge to show up will probably cover the job.
If they have to run wiring, it depends on how much work is required to fish the wire to the location.

handyman will be far cheaper [check craigslist or similar]. cost depends on many details not given ... including how the house is wired up, what [very specifically] needs doing, and where you need the work done [it is far more expensive in NYC than rural Iowa], etc. Electrician? not less than $200 and likely a good bit more --
