Medical Record Question?

About 5 years ago I saw a dr at a private psychiatric office. Not owned by him, but there were I believe 3 drs that worked there. I stopped going there as I had moved, but I decided to start seeing a dr local to me and want my medical records for the dr to see. I called the clinic and they said the dr doesnt work there anymore and they dont have my records. I have tried to track the dr down, but it appears hes 76 now and most likely retired. Is there anything I can do? And why wouldnt the clinic keep the medical records?

Most psych docs if he wasn’t affiliated with a hospital like some are who have admitting priviledges he was likely renting space independently, not keeping his records with the clinic

Obviously, he did not work for the clinic.  He rented space there independently, and ran his own business.  Most states, if not all, have to keep their records by law for ten years.  After that, they are usually destroyed.  It wouldn't make sense to pay for storage beyond those ten years.  Since it has only been five in your case, contact the Medical Board in the state where you saw him.  They will have his forwarding address, and you can contact him and ask for the records.  You will have to pay for them, so much per page, and it could take up to a month to get them.  The cost is provided for by law too.  He cannot give you the originals and that's why you have to pay for them to be copied.

If he was a psychologist, he was probably renting space and not an employee of theirs.
