They were both great, but sang differently. Aretha was the Queen of Soul, Whitney was more Pop. I'd say they tied.

Aretha! She will always have a special place in my heart, I grew up on her music and wanted to sing like her. No other lady can sing Soul better than the Queen herself!

I don't compare singers because I appreciate the individual styles of each singer. To me both of those ladies were great singers in their own rights.

You are comparing apples and oranges but if you would ask who is more R&B and Soul that would be Aretha Franklin.

Aretha sang so much more naturally with such a gifted voice. It wasn't about having trained vocals--she had an innate ability to produce sounds and tones with her voice like no other. Whitney hit her notes with such precision and strength. She was vocally powerful, but had an innate ability to go from a whisper to a fine scream in an instant. She could hold and waver her notes like no other. I have to say they sang on an equal level, just in a different way.

If you were to combine both their singing talents into one person, that would be Barbra Streisand, who has such a fluid and natural sound, capable of hitting the highs and deep lows with no effort. She can hold her notes at any range--she has no weakness whatsoever.

Different genres but what about Diana Ross or Tammi Terrell while we're at it ?
