Gandalf stole the show in both the books and the movies.  In the world of LOTR, he was technically an angel.

Starting reading the book years ago but didn’t grab me.  The films were the same.  But I admire the fact Tolkien created a whole imagined world. I’ve been to Sarehole Mill, Birmingham, England where Tolkien spent much of his childhood. Now run as a museum.

I can appreciate they were good books but both the movies and the books bored me to tears. The movies were worse for me. I do like fantasy but not Tolkien much. No real reason why I just found them too slow. Which is odd because I quite like classic books. Guess you can't like everything.

I answered that on in English class at Tufts U in the early 60's. the story is about a bunch of English boys stranded on an Island and how they divided into two  tribes one very savage and acting like a native tribe with rituals and chants full of superstition and the other more intellectual trying to figure out how to survive or escape in a more logical civilized way.

Not everything from the book ended up in the movie.
