    It can be shown via the work-kinetic energy theorem that the escape velocity for a spherical mass is √(2GM / R)

     

    Plugging in our values, we find the escape velocity for this star is √(2 * 6.67 * 10^-11 * 2.8 * 10^30) / (20000 m) ≈ 137,000 km/s

     

    This is far beyond the rocket's velocity of 137 km/s. It does not escape.
