Disputing a charge?

A co-worker placed a 2500 wager on one of those sports betting/casino apps and lost. After losing he Disputed the charge with his bank and got his money back. How is this possible? Or he’s obviously lying

It is common to receive a credit once a dispute is made, but will later lose the credit once the dispute is researched.  Thus he isn't lying, just that he doesn't realize the future result.
