you can break a 2d shape or 3d piece into smaller shapes and pieces?

and then they can be located in various 2d areas or 3d space.  we all know that.  my question is is a line that's broken into various lines, you can place them on a 2d piece of paper and not just on the line itself: so is a line a 1d object or 2d object because it has thickness?

A line has no thickness at all. It is 1 dimensional. A line segment is also 1D. It doesn't matter how it is embedded on a plane or in space.

A line has no thickness, even though the graphic representation of a line must have a finite thickness in order to be seen.  A line is a one-dimensional object.  The fact that you can break it up and move pieces of it around in two dimensions is no more meaningful than the fact that you can break up a 2d shape into various pieces and move the pieces in a 3rd dimension.
