If the walls are plaster, sometimes chicken wire or similar wire mesh is used as reinforcing. This will cause problems. try using a biquad antenna, they cut through interference better than dipoles normally used on wifi routers.

Age, no.  Wood or other build properties, yes.  

Old houses with add on sections can build around bricks in the walls, which will dampen wifi.  some older houses (ours was built in 1960s) use a sheet of thick aluminum foil instead of insulation (Yes, it's true) and if this is in a wall between you and your router, it can cause problems.  Wiring especially old Knob and Tube style that is left in the wall can cause issues as well.  

I don't think the material of the mouse matters more than the actual location of the router or antenna.

The age of a house has nothing to do with anything. Most houses, old and new, are constructed with wood, plaster and lathe or gypsumboard, brick, and concrete. Wood is easier for radio signals to penetrate than concrete or brick, so that is not the source of whatever problem you're having, unless you're used to living in a tent in the middle of a prairie.

If you have an old house, that has plaster walls - that can impact Wi-Fi signal.  Plaster is essentially concrete.  On walls it's more impactful to Wi-Fi than drywall (sheetrock).

Any electrical motors (refrigerant compressors) will impact Wi-Fi. 

Metal studs in the wall impact Wi-Fi.  

Impact windows (hurricane windows) impact Wi-Fi.

I have an small older home in the SE USA that has "stucco" on the interior walls.  Stucco is essentially the same as plaster.  Wi-Fi coverage in my tiny ~1500 square feet home is not great.
