Using a hyphen?
When writing the words "off course" in a sentence, is a hyphen required?
Example:
Enterprise careens off course as missile charges strike its hull.

In that sentence, no comma is required because you use it as a prepositional phrase that modifies the verb "careens." The only time you'd hyphenate it is if you used the phrase as a prepositive adjective (e.g., The off-course missile struck Enterprise's hull.).
