The commodification of basic necessities started when the first farmer grew more turnips than he could eat and decided to barter some off in exchange for carrots. It's a matter of remunerating others for the work they do in the same way their salaries go to purchase whatever product your line of work produces. There are some people who want a life of subsistence on only what they can produce themselves. But most prefer the variety available when items are traded back and forth so they don't have live on just turnips and carrots.
