Removing an anti-virus program that came with the computer.?

I'm not all that computer savvy, but I heard that sometimes an anti-virus program that comes with a computer, needs to be removed by a computer tech. I don't know if this has changed over the years or not, but I will be installing a new Internet Security program (that contains anti-virus of course). I don't know if the anti-virus already on the computer is the type that a tech has to install or even if this was ever true. I know to go into the add/remove programs, but again, some anti-virus programs can't be removed that way.

If anyone out there knows how to install the anti-virus program, should it be the type I've been mentioning, I'd appreciate your guidance. Thanks!

Update:

Sorry, I said "I dont know if the anti-virus already on the computer is the t ype that a tech has to install". I meant to type UNINSTALL.

Well first you need to find out if there is a a anti-virus program installed which you should be able to see on your startup screen. If not look under programs or in add/delete programs. When you find it under add/delete programs then simply uninstall it.Some anti virus programs leave leftovers from the program still on your pc so in order to remove it completely you need to look for a tool which you can simply google search then download.Simply google whatever antivirus program it is plus removal tool and download it then click on it and select run. For example google advast antivirus removal tool.Btw the site where you download the tool usually has instructions. After you have done that then you can install your new antivirus program. Good luck

I hire a PROFESSIONAL to set up my computers.  I would NEVER "fool around" when I didn't have a clue.
