She uses a knife to pierce the plastic lid instead of a fork.

Memories I guess. My Welsh mam wasn't great cook, but she taught me how to make a meal for a family on a low budget, and she was a great baker ( bread and cakes). I love to cook and bake, I work as a care home chef and I thank my mam for being my first teacher.

Reminds a person of home sweet home tons of butter and Crisco. Many chefs got recipe ideas from moms kitchen, call dish another name yet still moms recipe.

Probably there is some love and care and concern mixed with the food.

liver, fish, carrot/veggie juice... nearly poisoned my father (cancer survivor with hyper Vit A.

Theoretically, mom knows you better than any restaurant does.  Plus mom keeps her cooking healthy (we hope), because her motive is love not profit.

My MOM? Nothing. Mom HATES cooking, yet both her kids are professionals-me a chef, my sister is a baker.

It wasn't really ever mom's cooking for me, but GRANDMA'S. That's where it was at. Mom's cooking means home, comfort, all the recipes she made when you were sick, or your favorites, her own holiday classics and traditions handed down from her mother and her mother's mother.

Admittedly, my mother was a terrible cook growing up, and that's why it was my grandma's cooking that I really loved. My mom never got the hang of cooking as we were growing up (single mom with 3 kids, so lots of noodles and jar sauce), but after we left, she had time to really try, fail, and try again, and now she's an amazing cook...of course...after we're all grown up and gone! But she did make some good things, like her cookies, and while it wasn't cooking, toast and peach baby food, and grilled cheese when I was sick always reminds me of my mother.

It's just comfortable and happy when you get a meal cooked from mom...well, MOST moms.
